Recently, Elon Musk revealed some of his newest solar panels. Most people are familiar with the typical solar panels on roofs, which can be an eye sore. Musk knows that these aren’t the solar panels of the future, which is why he’s come up with a unique new idea: Roof tiles that are double as solar panels. In this video, you can see how these tiles were created in a way that from the ground you’d never know they weren’t your typical roof tiles.

Are roof tiles here to stay?
This project was interesting and the video is especially interesting. For example, one of the first questions people often have when considering these roof tiles is whether or not they’re strong enough to withstand everything a roof must withstand. For example, what if a tree branch falls on them? No one wants to deal with a crushed roof and when you hear that these solar roof tiles are made of glass, it’s a quick jump to assuming that they’re easy to break.
However, as you watch the video, you’ll see that this isn’t the case at all. They’re actually stronger than the three leading types of tiles. You don’t even have to take Musk’s word for it: The video features footage of a weight being dropped on each type of roof tile.
The cost of custom work is less than you’d think
The final concern people often have when considering solar roof tiles is that they’ll be prohibitively expensive. While it is generally true that the upfront costs of a solar roof will be higher than the costs of a typical roof, it’s also true that if you factor in the cost of the roof plus five years of utilities for both homes, it’s more affordable to pay more upfront and get the solar roof because you then save considerably on utilities.
