Maintenance And Your Garage Door

Garage doors can be expensive so it is important to make sure that they are properly cared for.  This means that you should have them serviced by a qualified garage door repair & service professional to keep them operating smoothly.  Between services, there are some things that you can do, yourself, however, to keep your garage doors looking great.

A good cleaning

Keeping your garage door clean will prevent chemicals and other materials from damaging the garage door surface.  I always like to clean my garage door at the same time that I wash my car but you could put together a schedule where you wash the garage door at least every other month.  If you live in an extremely dry environment where there is a lot of dirt and dust, you may want to wash it more frequently during the hot weather.

NOTE – When you wash your garage door, make sure that you use a soap that is recommended for the type of garage door that you have.

Oil and lubricating

At the beginning of each new season, it is a good idea to take some time and apply oil to any of the parts on your garage door that move.  You can do this part yourself, or you can call a garage door repair & service company to come out and perform the job for you.  You should apply sufficient oil so that all of the parts receive a good coat of it and if you are worried about oil dripping on your garage floor, you can put down a tarp or an old towel.

Remove debris from garage entrance

Leaves, dirt, pebbles, salt, and other debris have been known to create havoc with garage doors, their surfaces, and their hardware, so you want to keep the area around your garage entrance as clean as possible.  It is important that your garage door can close flush against the cement foundation because when it is unable to do this, it can affect the alignment of the door.  This is why, sometimes, garage doors tend to stick and do not appear completely straight.
