Did you hit your garage door with your vehicle?
In our experience, most of the time when a garage door comes off its track it’s because it’s been hit by a vehicle. Everyone has done this – perhaps it’s late and you’re distracted, or it’s early and you’re not paying attention. Either way, you pull out too fast or get into your garage too fast. The door isn’t completely open and boom – you hit it. This may have seemed like a minor issue but your car only needs to be traveling three miles per hour to damage your garage door.
Are your horizontal tracks bent under the weight of the door?
Another fairly common cause of garage doors coming off the tracks is when they have poor quality horizontal tracks in the first place. Remember that the average garage door can weigh as much as 400 pounds. If the tracks aren’t high quality, then they will bend over time. This can cause also cause your horizontal tracks to move and no longer be aligned with the vertical rails. In this case, you’re dealing with a dangerous situation and should call for repair right away.
Are your rollers weak or worn out?
If you have just one or two of the rollers wear out then there will be added stress on the rollers that do work. As a result, those can come off the track or break themselves. Having extra weight on these other rollers can also result in the rails bending. The heavier and more substantial the garage door is, the more serious the problem can be.
Did your lift cable break?
This doesn’t happen often but we have seen it. It’s especially likely if you have an older garage door and you haven’t had it tuned up regularly. The lift cables are on either side of your garage door. They wind around grooves within a drum and that drum is attached to a steel shaft that holds a torsion spring. If the alignment of the door isn’t right, then the cable won’t line up right and it can break without warning.
