Electric garage door openers and garage door remotes are undoubtedly an amazing convenience. None of us would want to return to the days when you had to haul your heavy garage doors up and down by hand every time you wanted to access the garage! However, there are some situations where having to carry around a remote may not be so convenient. Fortunately, there are some interesting alternatives to your traditional garage door opener remote that you might want to consider.

Keypads

Some high-tech garage door openers come with an option to install a keypad that can be used to control the door. This is ideal for people who like to run or walk and don’t want to carry a house key or garage door opener with them. The keypad can be programed with a unique PIN to open the door and you can change the PIN periodically for security. A keypad is also convenient for times when you may need to provide a friend, family member, or service person with access to your garage and/or home.

Car Controls

Depending on what kind of car you have, you may be able to turn your car into a remote. For example, many GMC vehicles have a Universal Home Remote feature that can be used to turn a button in the car into a controller for your garage door or home security system. Universal Home Remote (and similar systems from other car manufacturers) is easy to set up. Basically you just have to press and hold the buttons in the car until some indicator lights flash. Then, press the button you want to program and hold your garage door remote an inch or so away from it. Push the remote and the button and the car will learn to transmit the signal. This is great for homes with more vehicles than remotes because you never have to worry about driving off without your remote again.

Apps

Some garage door openers can be controlled using an app on your smartphone or on a computer. This offers the capability to not only open and close the door when you are coming and going, but also to check on the garage while you are away. Many systems offer the ability to send you a reminder if you’ve forgotten to close the garage door after a certain amount of time has passed. Then you are able to use the app to shut the door from anywhere you may be at the time.
